The location of her body has always shaped how investigators view the crime. It was not a spot a child or teen would wander into by accident. It was a place that required purpose, transportation, and familiarity.

The Quarry Location

A remote, industrial site

Kristy’s body was found in what locals often refer to as the quarry or the gravel pit on Sleepy Valley Road. It was a rugged, partially wooded area with dirt access roads. It sat just off the country road away from heavy traffic.

The quarry area included:
• Thick brush
• A large pit carved into the ground
• Access roads that turned muddy after rain
• Minimal visibility

This location worked in the offender’s favor. Someone could approach the site without being seen from the main road. Once inside, activity could easily go unnoticed.

Why the quarry mattered to investigators

1. It suggested the killer knew the area

This was not a random public spot. It required local knowledge or prior experience. Investigators have long noted that the disposal site pointed to someone who either worked in that region, lived nearby.

2. It provided time and concealment

The quarry was quiet at night. There were no houses directly overlooking the pit. Noise from vehicles or movement would not draw attention. The terrain created visual barriers. This gave the killer time to leave Kristy’s body without interruption.

3. It shaped the estimated timeline

Because the quarry is so secluded, and because the ground and vegetation provided some insulation, establishing a precise time of death became difficult. Investigators have hesitated to lock down a firm timeline.

4. It influenced how the crime was understood

The violence Kristy suffered and the remote location suggested the killer selected the quarry deliberately. This was not a spontaneous place to leave someone. It was chosen.

Surrounding details connected to the quarry

• The road leading to the pit off Sleepy Valley Road was uneven and narrow. A normal sedan could make it but not without some effort. This suggested a driver comfortable with the terrain.
• Locals in the late 1990s often used rural quarries for drinking, riding four wheelers, or hanging out. Investigators interviewed people who were familiar with that specific pit.
• Because the area was frequented by teens, deputies questioned multiple young people who had been around the site in the days before and after Kristy disappeared.

Why the quarry remains central today

Nearly thirty years later, the quarry still represents one of the most revealing pieces of the case.

It tells investigators:
• Kristy was not killed where she was found.
• She was brought there.
• The person who brought her had enough privacy and confidence to move a body on rough terrain.
• The person either knew the quarry well or had been shown the area before.

Combined with the location of her body, the lack physical evidence at the scene, the pattern of injuries, the site continues to anchor the case timeline.

Fifteen year old Kristy Leigh Yates left home in Hot Springs, Arkansas on a Thursday morning in 1997 and never came back. Two days later her body was found near an abandoned rock quarry off Sleepy Valley Road. She had been strangled and stabbed.

That public mood mattered. It shaped policy, shaped attitudes, and shaped the systems that operated far from the view of most Arkansans. One of those systems was the Negro Boys Industrial School outside Little Rock…out of sight and out of mind.

Eighteen months after the crisis at Central High, twenty-one boys died behind locked doors in a fire. The same environment that produced a pro-Faubus anthem also produced a state institution where Black children lived in unsafe conditions without oversight, protection, or accountability.

The song has become a reminder of the gap between what leaders said about the future of Arkansas and the daily reality for the children in their care. Understanding both events together helps us see the broader pattern. The same politics that resisted integration also left the boys at Wrightsville vulnerable and unseen.

Below is the 1957 recording. It sits not only in a particular moment of Arkansas history but also in the long shadow of the fire that followed.

When Faubus refused integration in 1957, the world saw the crisis unfolding on the steps of Central High. The cameras were rolling. Reporters from across the country were watching. The state became a symbol of massive resistance.

The boys at the Negro Boys Industrial School did not have cameras. They did not have the eyes of the world on them. They lived in a place that was out of sight and out of mind, located miles from downtown Little Rock. Their dormitory had no working fire extinguishers, the boys never had fire drill, there was no adult supervision. Their doors locked from the outside. Their living conditions had been criticized for years, yet nothing meaningful changed.

The fire on March 5, 1959 revealed a truth that many already knew. The state could mobilize the National Guard to keep nine Black students out of a school. It did not mobilize anything close to that energy to protect the boys in its custody.

The more we learn, the more we understand how the era shaped their fate. The decisions made at the highest levels of the state affected which institutions received oversight, funding, and attention. The Negro Boys Industrial School received very little of any of those things.

We hope that revisiting this history honors the boys who died and the survivors who lived with the memory. Their stories deserve the light they were denied.

The original admission log from the school still exists. Dr. Brian Mitchell from the University of Illinois shared this page with us, dating back to the time of the fire. Several entries include notes identifying boys who died in the blaze, though not every victim is marked as such, and some of the boys who perished were never recorded in the log at all.

Roy Davis survived the fire at the Negro Boys Industrial School in Wrightsville, Arkansas. In 2008, while incarcerated in the Arkansas Department of Corrections, he was interviewed by the Arkansas Times.

During that interview, Roy helped solve a long-standing mystery. He remembered that one of the older boys, Jessie Carpenter Jr., had run to the dormitory door in an attempt to escape. Carpenter kicked the door open, and when he did, the fire surged inside. Jessie died in that doorway, but until Roy spoke, no one knew whether the door had actually been opened.

Roy recalled counting eight bunks back to the window where he ultimately climbed out to safety.

Roy died in 2020 of Covid while incarcerated in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

Both boys survived the blaze. Their voices and recollections are brought to life in the podcast through actors. In the years that followed, Joe and Willie Lee went on to build full lives, eventually marrying and raising families of their own.

Joe Nelson died in 2012 and Willie died in 2000. Both men are buried in Carlisle, Lonoke County, Arkansas.

Courtroom testimony reveals contradictions, shifting stories, and Ruth’s willingness to sacrifice herself for Warren Sumlin — the man she claimed both controlled her and convinced her to “take the rap.”

The jury sentenced Ruth to life without parole, while Warren initially received the death penalty, later commuted to life. Both would spend the rest of their days behind bars. Yet even in prison, Ruth clung to Warren and her faith, singing gospel with the “Prodigal Daughters” prison quintet, writing a memoir that never saw publication, and repeatedly seeking clemency — all denied.

Today, at 70 years old, Ruth remains confined at the McPherson Unit in Newport, Arkansas. She has served nearly five decades, still insisting she will not die in prison. But the question lingers: was she a cold-blooded killer, or a young woman manipulated into a life sentence by a man she couldn’t let go? What do you think?
